Every 18 September, World Bamboo Day marks a moment to recognise a plant that has long been valued for the way it grows. It is an opportunity to look closer at bamboo, not only as a material, but as a plant with qualities that have made it increasingly relevant in textiles and everyday products.
Bamboo is the fastest-growing plant on earth. Guinness World Records puts certain species at up to 91 cm in a single day under the right conditions, well ahead of fast-growing trees such as eucalyptus or poplar.
In other words, bamboo does not become sustainable only after it has been turned into a product. Its story begins with the plant itself.
The Plant Behind the Day
Bamboo is technically a grass, not a tree, and that is what explains its ability to regenerate. After harvesting, new shoots grow from the existing root system, so the plant continues its cycle without being replanted. It also asks for less along the way, needing significantly less water than a crop like cotton and growing without heavy reliance on pesticides.
This does not mean every bamboo product is automatically sustainable. The way bamboo is transformed into a usable fibre matters. Responsible sourcing and thoughtful production are what allow the natural qualities of bamboo to carry through into the materials we actually use, rather than being lost somewhere along the way.
A Standard That Runs Through Our Business
That distinction matters to us, because it is the same standard we hold the rest of the business to. It would be easy to point to bamboo and let one good material stand in for everything else. We would rather the rest of the business held up on its own terms.
This is reflected in our B Corp certification. As a B Corp certified company, Heveya has undergone independent assessment across environmental impact, governance, workers, community and customers, not just our bamboo products, but the company as a whole.
We were certified in May 2024 with a verified B Impact Score of 87.4. The qualifying threshold is 80, and the median for ordinary businesses completing the assessment is 50.9. Our strongest area was the environment.
It is not a claim we make about ourselves. It is a standard applied to us, checked, and verified.
The parallel is not accidental. Bamboo is sustainable because of what it already is, not because of what is said about it afterwards. We would like the same to be true of us, that what is verified matters more than what is claimed, and that this holds across the whole business, not only the parts that are easiest to point to.

Where Comfort and Responsibility Meet
Bamboo is often appreciated first for how it feels. When carefully processed into bamboo lyocell fibre, it becomes a fabric that is soft, breathable and smooth against the skin, the kind people notice the moment they lie down on it.
What is less often noticed is that this same fabric is also one of the more considered choices available, for many of the same reasons already described: a plant that grows fast, needs little water, and asks for minimal intervention along the way. The softest fabric we make also happens to be one of the most sustainable, and that is not a coincidence. It is the reason we chose it in the first place.
Comfort and responsibility are often treated as though they pull in opposite directions, as though one has to be sacrificed for the other. Bamboo does not ask for that trade-off. Made well, bamboo bedding offers both, because both come from the same source, a plant that was never asked to become something it was not.
